Famous Letters

Here, Jackie Robinson writes a letter to President Eisenhower . He is protesting segregation of African Americans in various parts of the country. This is right around the time when in 1957, Governor Orval Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to stop nine African American students from entering there high school. President Eisenhower did end up sending troops to force integration at the schools, and made sure those nine students were allowed into there highschool, even if he did so reluctantly. Jackie protests all this racism and segregation through this letter and explains to the President that the black community has been patient. Eisenhower told the Summit Meeting of Negro Leaders to be patient with the whole situation. Jackie explains in this letter that the black community has been patient enough, and wants the same rights all the other Americans do. He wants equality throughout the country, and he wanted it to be put into order quickly. He calmly explains that the rest of the Americans gained these rights 150 years ago, and they deserved to gain those rights right then.
